Lorsque Henry David Thoreau écrit ses premiers
essais, jamais traduits en français jusqu'à ce jour,
il a dix-sept ans. Le premier d'entre eux, «Suivre
la mode», date de 1834 : Thoreau vient d'entrer à
l'université de Harvard pour y étudier la rhétorique,
le Nouveau Testament, la philosophie et les sciences
grâce à une bourse. Il y rencontrera plus tard Ralph
Waldo Emerson, qui deviendra son ami, puis son
mentor. En 1837, l'année de l'essai «Barbarie et
